How did the history of digital or online publishing begin?
The history of digital publishing goes back to the invention of the printing press. The first books were printed in the Middle Ages, and they were not very expensive. In fact, they were only available to a few people who could afford them.
Then, in the early 1800s, a Frenchman named Etienne Dolet invented a machine called a lithography press that made it possible to print books with more than one page per sheet of paper. This was revolutionary because it allowed people to publish newspapers and magazines without having to rely on expensive woodblock printing presses or other methods of reproducing text at high speed.
In 1807, another Frenchman named Nicolas-Jacques Conte invented a type of printing press that used rollers instead of traditional printing blocks to transfer ink onto paper. This machine was faster than the lithography process because it didn’t require an image on each individual sheet of paper; instead, one image would be transferred onto multiple sheets at once using rollers that moved over the entire surface area at once.
The first newspaper was printed in France in 1781 by Samuel Plimoth, who published what is now known as The Boston Gazette (not to be confused with The Boston Globe). Although this newspaper didn’t include any graphics or photographs, it did include text.
The first major milestone in the history of digital publishing occurred in 1966 when IBM introduced its System/360 mainframe line. The System/360 featured a central processing unit (CPU), which could perform calculations on data stored in memory (RAM). This machine was designed to handle large volumes of data at high speed and store it in RAM for faster retrieval.
In 1968, IBM introduced its System/370 line of mainframes, which included a new CPU called the 370/168 with 10 bits per byte of storage capacity and 24 channels for input/output (I/O). This machine was also capable of performing large amounts of arithmetic operations on stored data in memory without moving any data from one place to another. In addition, it had enough I/O channels so that multiple peripheral devices could be attached to it simultaneously without waiting for each device to complete its operation.
